Manifesto Barbados: Pop-Up Art Campus & Lounge

    manifesto barbados lounge

    “What’s up with that shed?”

That was the question that started it all, an idea to do something revolutionary and different, a place for the arts if only for a little while, a Pop-Up creative space. After throwing around ideas, we finally settled on the project; The Manifesto Barbados Pop-Up Campus and we pitched it to the Wendy Kidd the owner of Holders House.

For those of you in the Arts world in Barbados that don’t know the name you should she’s the founder of the annual Holders Festival Season, one of the largest and renowned festivals on island. After hearing our idea she immediately jumped on board and offered us the use of the ground for free. And so the project was born.

On Sunday August 21st, we got down to the business of cleaning the shed on the Holder’s Festival Season grounds in preparation for the upcoming Manifesto Pop-Up Campus & Lounge. The lounge will provide an atmosphere  for artists to exhibit their work, perform, hang out, grab a drink, and watch a few non-Michael Bay films.

As this project evolves and becomes reality, stay tuned to the site for updates, as we document the whole thing.

The next move is to invite artists to showcase their best work (video instillations, sculpture, drawings, paintings, etc.). We’re aiming to have this project ready to go by September 23rd and lead into the Manifesto festival (October 15th-16th), which also will be held at Holders House.

We need your help! Volunteers, Artist submissions and any donations i.e. couches, lamps, rugs, books, pretty much anything that will add to the decor .  Check out some pics of the space after the jump.

    The Dub Below

The Dub Below: prod by Justin Padron

    Mind blowing!!!

Every once in a while you find greatness in music,  it comes in all forms, from a musician on an instrument, to a singers vocal range, to a producers vision on a beat. But every once in a while you hear a DJ or a producer do a mash-up that’s unbelievably special. Last night we found one, and it’s been in solid rotation of more than a few of the Manifesto Barbados team’s  headphones all day.

Atlanta naitive Justin Padron produced a gem of a mix-tape called “The Dub Below” a collection of some of the biggest hits by the legendary ATL-eliens Outkast and threw on what are quite possibly some of the craziest dubstep beats of all time, to create what we consider to be one of the best mash-ups since Ratatat Remixes Vol:2

We invite all of you our fam to join us in this journey of musical brilliance that is
    The Dub Below

Ian Kamau – “I Choose You” (Dir. Nabil Shash) [Video]

    Something Inspiring!!

We found this on our Fam at Manifesto Toronto’s website hope you love this like we do!!

Recently, I have had the pleasure of garnering many friends from Toronto’s Habesha community, among every conversation are lyrics from Ian Kamau’s “I Choose You” ends up being brought up and quoted.

This gem is well-appreciated not only for it being a dub over UGK/Outkast’s hit “Intl Player’s Anthem” (which in turns samples the amazing Willie Hutch), this joint gets much appreciation for the sincere lyricism of the narrative hindsight a love tale that Ian Kamau displays.

It’s wonderful to see it conveyed with visuals as he tag-teams with Nabil Shash to bring you more dopeness.

Here is what Kamau had to say for it:

Choose You is my second collaboration with Nabil Shash (although the third to be released after Misunderstood), the song was featured on the Love & Other Struggles Mixtape released February 15, 2010. This video features the our friend Sara (Sars) Asfaha who graciously agreed to be a part of the shoot and the apartment I grew up in in Esplanade in downtown Toronto. Enjoy.

Ian Kamau’s new album comes out October 7th

    The Radiant Child

Finally remembered that there was a much hyped documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat floating around out there. I’ve been meaning to check this out for over a year now. Today I put an end to that…

Finally remembered that there was a much hyped documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat  floating around out there. I’ve been meaning to check this out for over a year now. Today I put an end to that and consulted google for a solution. The film does not disappoint. A great way to spend 93 minutes.  Hit the link below for the full movie.

    Shad 38

Shad K – “Flawless” prod. Frank Dukes

    Simply Flawless!!!

Our favorite Rapper out of T-dot Shad-K  just dropped his new single off  Real Frequency’s Toronto compilation The New North and it’s simply just some ill lyrics and flow off of a gritty beat…not your typical Shad track but it sounds like some circa 1996 Staten Island, Wutang-esque basement beat and we’re loving it!!

    Björk / Crystalline

Mad geniuses Björk, Peter Sluszka and Michel Gondry team up on the visuals for her new single, Crystalline.

Here’s some background on how it was made via. Hornet Workshop

Shot on 16mm Bolex cameras, Crystallinefeels more like an experimental sci-fi film than a typical music video.  Lighting effects were achieved through multiple exposures that involved backwinding or capping the lens to painstakingly capture numerous passes on one frame of film.  To ensure repeatable but modifiable actions, servo controlled LED rigs were custom designed and built.

Bjork’s performance was initially recorded against black on multiple cameras and then projected onto the set against a spinning disc hovering above a cratered moonscape.  Three projectors, arrayed along an arc at 30 degree intervals, synched with the performance create perspective shifts when the camera moves around the disc giving Bjork an ethereal, holographic presence.

Additionally, fabricated ice crystals, streaking comets, hammered metal drums nestled in moon craters, concentric sand patterns, and Gondry’s abstract 2D drawings all contribute to the cosmic vibe.

The entire shoot, including fabrication, rigging, lighting design, animation, and artist performance was completed at Hornet Workshop over the course of one intense month.
